TOEIC®-এর জন্য বিশেষণ, ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ এবং তুলনা: ফাঁদ এড়ানোর সম্পূর্ণ নির্দেশিকা

Adjectives describe nouns, adverbs modify verbs, other adjectives, or adverbs. Comparisons establish relationships between elements.
In the TOEIC®, these three concepts appear in 30 to 40% of Part 5 questions. The traps are always the same: adjective/adverb confusion, incorrect position in the sentence, incorrect comparative form.
The difference between "quick" and "quickly" might seem obvious. But under pressure, facing four similar options, errors happen fast.
The classic trap: placing an adverb where an adjective is expected, relying on your automatism. You read too fast, you don't check what the word is actually modifying.
Adjectives and Adverbs: Understanding the Difference Once and for All
The basic rule is simple. Yet, it often generates errors in the TOEIC®. These traps exploit your haste to mislead you.
Adjective: Describes a noun or a pronoun. Placed before the noun or after a linking verb (be, seem, appear, become, feel, look, sound).
- "The efficient manager reviewed the report."
দক্ষ ম্যানেজার রিপোর্টটি পর্যালোচনা করেছেন। - "The presentation was clear."
উপস্থাপনাটি স্পষ্ট ছিল।
Adverb: Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Often formed by adding -ly to the adjective (quick → quickly).
- "She answered quickly during the interview."
তিনি সাক্ষাৎকারের সময় দ্রুত উত্তর দিয়েছিলেন। - "The policy was extremely clear."
নীতিটি ছিল অত্যন্ত স্পষ্ট।
Frequent Traps in Part 5
The TOEIC® plays on three levers to make you doubt.
Misleading Position: An adverb placed right before a noun to make you hesitate.
- "The team completed the project successfully." (adverb → modifies "completed")
টিমটি সফলভাবে প্রকল্পটি সম্পন্ন করেছে। - "The successful project impressed the client." (adjective → describes "project")
সফল প্রকল্পটি ক্লায়েন্টকে মুগ্ধ করেছে।
Masked Linking Verbs: After "seem", "appear", "remain", "become", you must use an adjective, not an adverb.
- "The results seem accurate." (NOT "accurately")
ফলাফলগুলি সঠিক বলে মনে হচ্ছে।
Adverbs Identical to the Adjective: Some words never change (fast, hard, late, early, straight).
- "She works hard every day." (adverb, not "hardly" which means "barely")
তিনি প্রতিদিন কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেন।
In our experience with the candidates we coach, confusion between "hard" and "hardly" recurs in 1 out of 5 Part 5 questions. The reason: both words exist, but have radically different meanings.
Under pressure, the brain selects "hardly" because it looks like a classic -ly adverb. And we see this often among candidates.
Comparisons: Recognizing the Expected Structure
The TOEIC® tests your ability to choose the correct comparative form according to the context. Three structures come up repeatedly.
| Type | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Comparative | -er / more + than | "This solution is cheaper than the previous one." |
| Superlative | -est / most + the | "This is the most effective strategy we've tested." |
| Equality | as + adjective/adverb + as | "The new policy is as strict as the old one." |
Practical Rule:
- 1 syllable → -er / -est (cheap → cheaper → cheapest)
- 2 syllables ending in -y → -ier / -iest (easy → easier → easiest)
- 2 or more syllables → more / most (effective → more effective → most effective)
Errors That Cost Points
Double Comparative: Never combine "more" + -er form.
- "This method is more efficient." (NOT "more efficienter")
এই পদ্ধতিটি আরও কার্যকর।
Forgetting "the" before the Superlative: Always necessary.
- "She is the fastest employee in the team." (NOT "fastest")
তিনি দলের দ্রুততম কর্মচারী।
Incomplete Comparison: "than" must always compare two explicit elements.
- "Our sales are higher than last year's." (NOT just "higher")
আমাদের বিক্রয় গত বছরের তুলনায় বেশি।
Even among candidates who already have access to a preparation platform through their school, the confusion between "less" and "fewer" comes up regularly in Part 5.
- "Fewer" is used with countable nouns (fewer employees)
- "less" with uncountable nouns (less time).
On Flow Exam, you can practice directly on the Comparisons topic in exactly the same format as the TOEIC®. So if you have difficulties with this topic, you will never make the same mistakes again.
Special and Irregular Cases
Some comparatives and superlatives follow no logical rule. You must memorize them.
| Adjective | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | best |
| bad | worse | worst |
| far | farther/further | farthest/furthest |
| little | less | least |
| much/many | more | most |
- "This quarter's performance is better than expected."
এই ত্রৈমাসিকের কর্মক্ষমতা প্রত্যাশার চেয়ে ভালো। - "We chose the best candidate for the position."
আমরা পদের জন্য সেরা প্রার্থীকে বেছে নিয়েছি।
Attention: "further" is also used figuratively (further discussion = more in-depth discussion), whereas "farther" remains concrete (physical distance).
The TOEIC® Decision Checklist
When faced with a Part 5 question with four options (adjective, adverb, comparative, superlative), apply this grid in 10 seconds.
| Clue in the sentence | Expected form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Right before a noun | Adjective | "a quick response" |
| After an action verb | Adverb | "responded quickly" |
| After be/seem/appear/feel | Adjective | "seems reasonable" |
| "than" in the sentence | Comparative | "faster than" |
| "the" + group context | Superlative | "the best option" |
| "as... as" | Base form | "as efficient as" |
What we observe among our candidates: those who progress the fastest have one thing in common. They no longer think about the rule during the exam.
They identify the word being modified (noun, verb, adjective) and select the form by reflex. To achieve this, there is only one way: repeat the exercise until it becomes automatic.
Adverbs of Degree and Frequency
Two categories of adverbs come up very often in Part 5 and 6.
Adverbs of Degree: very, extremely, quite, fairly, rather, too, enough.
- "The deadline is extremely tight."
ডেডলাইনটি অত্যন্ত কঠিন।
TOEIC® Trap: "too" (too much) vs "very" (very). "Too" implies a negative excess.
- "The process is too complicated." (= it needs to be simplified)
প্রক্রিয়াটি অতিরিক্ত জটিল।
Adverbs of Frequency: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never.
Position: before the main verb, after the auxiliary or "be".
- "We always review the budget in March."
আমরা সবসময় মার্চ মাসে বাজেট পর্যালোচনা করি। - "The reports are usually submitted on time."
প্রতিবেদনগুলি সাধারণত সময়মতো জমা দেওয়া হয়।
In real-time conditions, you have 20 seconds per question in Part 5. Recognizing the expected structure should take you a maximum of 5 seconds.
Classic Errors: Summary Table
| Error | Correction | Why it is a TOEIC® Trap |
|---|---|---|
| "The team worked hardly." | "The team worked hard." | "Hardly" = barely, not "durement" |
| "She is more faster." | "She is faster." | Double comparative forbidden |
| "This is most effective solution." | "This is the most effective solution." | "The" mandatory with superlative |
| "The presentation was greatly." | "The presentation was great." | After "be" → adjective |
| "He answered quick." | "He answered quickly." | Adverb necessary to modify "answered" |
| "Sales are less than forecast." | "Sales are lower than forecast." | "Less" does not modify a verb alone |
